Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
What a special time of the year! For me, there is a spiritual dimension that is timeless and an anticipation of the coming New Year that reminds me that I am being given another opportunity to improve my life and my contributions to my world.
When I was a college freshman, my English teacher introduced me to this gem. I’d like to leave this with you as my Christmas gift to you, for it expresses what I deeply believe. Fra Giovanni Giocondo, a Renaissance pioneer and a Franciscan friar, wrote it on Christmas Eve, 1513. The message is timeless.
“There is nothing I can give you which you have not; but there is much, very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in today. Take heaven! No peace lies in the future, which is not hidden in the present. Take peace!
The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. Take joy! There is a radiance and glory in the darkness could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look. Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by the covering, cast them away as ugly, or heavy, or hard. Know the covering, and you fill find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand that brings it to you.
Everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty, believe me, that angel's hand is there: the gift is there, and the wonder of an overshadowing presence. Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty — beneath its covering — that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Take courage then to claim it; that is all! But courage you have; and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country, to our home.
And so, at this Christmas time, I greet you. Not quite as the world sends greetings, but with profound esteem and with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks and the shadows flee away.

The Secret Every Top Performer Knows
We admire the world’s top performers in any field. Their excellence seems so natural that we rarely ponder what they did to get to that point. In an NPR broadcast, I heard an interview of Atul Gawande, professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gawande was at Wimbledon, watching the tennis tournament when he noticed tennis star Raphael Nadal’s coach encouraging him from the sidelines. Dr. Gawande asks, “If one of the world’s greatest tennis players has a coach, why shouldn’t doctors and teachers?” Let’s go to the other extreme. Consider someone who has a disability in the very area that he has to perform. For example, imagine some one with a severe stuttering problem whose job requires him to speak in public. How can that be, you ask? Did you see the movie, The King’s Speech? That movie showed how Prince Albert, who was soon to become King George VI, engaged the services of a self-taught speech pathologist, an Australian-born commoner, Lionel Logue, to help him overcome his speech problems. Under Logue’s coaching, King George VI went on to give many speeches that played an important role in uniting Britain during WWII. Most of us fall between Raphael Nadal and King George VI. Have you considered a coach to help you in your game or field, whatever that may be?
Since you are receiving my e-newsletter, I assume that you are interested in becoming a more effective public speaker, communicator, and presenter. Congratulations for exposing yourself to ideas and guidance that can make a difference in your performances as a speaker and presenter. A life coach named Craig Roderick wrote, “Coaching is only for those who are up to being something far greater than “how to” books can take them…that is, further than their own natural talent can take them. They must be willing to sacrifice what they are, for what they can become.” As a New Year is about to dawn, find out how a speech coach can help you reach your goals. If you are a non-native English speaker, discover pronunciation secrets so others understand you. If you are a leader and would like to be better able to inspire your followers, discover the principles of great inspirational speakers. If you are a good speaker but would like to have a more pleasing voice and greater vocal variety, learn simple exercises that will make your voice enjoyable to your listeners. Quote to Think About
“The doorstep to the temple of wisdom is the knowledge of one’s own ignorance.”
- Charles Spurgeon

Did You Know?
The average person speaks at a rate of 110-150 words per minute (wpm).

The reason you frequently cannot properly pronounce the words of a foreign language is because you don't know how to use your tongue and throat to make those sounds.

The introduction of your speech should take no more than 10% of the entire length of the speech.

Research has shown that the believability of a message is more influenced by a speaker's body language than by the actual words spoken.

A professional speaker, unlike a comedian, uses humor to make a point, not just to make people laugh.

When you speak to an audience with bright lights shining down on you, you cannot see the people sitting in the first few rows in the front.

An easy and fun way for you to improve the quality of your voice is to join a choir.

Average people, not just top athletes, are increasingly hiring coaches to help them achieve their goals.

Toastmasters International, the world's leading volunteer organization for helping people develop their communication and leadership skills is now in 116 countries, has more than 13,000 chapters, and more than 270,000 members.

Dr. Dilip has been a speech coach, trainer, and keynote speaker for nineteen years.
